5 Things To Think About Before Approaching A Website Designer

So, you’ve decided that you want a website, but you aren’t sure where to go from there. Here are five things to think about before approaching a website designer.

Number of Pages

Think about what kind of pages you want on your website. This will help make your website build a lot quicker and get you online faster.

Some examples of pages could be:

  • Home

  • About

  • Services

  • Booking Form

  • Contact

  • Portfolio

It is also important to note that the more pages you have, the more money it will cost to build, so consider this when planning out a budget.

Content

So you’ve decided how many pages you want. Next up, content. I have been building websites for over three years now, and I find one of the biggest hold-ups in getting a business online is waiting for the content. When you figure out the exact pages you want on your website, start writing content for each section. This again will speed up the process.

An excellent place to start is to write a summary of your business. This can be used in several areas on your website. It can also be used on multiple platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn etc. The key thing is once you know what pages you are going to include on your website, the content will then be a lot easier to map out.

Photographs

I can’t stress enough, how important high quality, professional photographs are for a website. They can take your website from just ok to absolutely amazing. I recommend booking a photography session with a professional photographer and gather a bank of images for your website. These images will also come in handy for marketing materials, social media posts and much more. Again, if you have professional photos before approaching a website designer, you’ll notice your website will come together a lot quicker. I am using this section as an excuse to show you a professional picture of my dog, Rosie.

Domain

A domain is a unique name for your website. For example, mine is www.seesee.ie. Domains can come in many form such as .com, .co.uk, .org or .ie like mine. It is important to check and see if it is available for your business. Remember, if you own a domain name, it doesn’t mean you will automatically have a website appear when you type that into your search engine, you then need to sort out hosting. I explain hosting in this blog here: https://www.seesee.ie/blog/creating-a-website

Business Email

Once you own a domain name, you can then set up a professional email address with it. For example, because I own the domain www.seesee.ie, my email is chris@seesee.ie. Professional email addresses can add a bit of extra professionalism to your business, but sometimes, it isn’t always needed. It’s good to think about if you want to have an email like this or if you are happy to use something like @gmail.com. If you are making flyers, signs or intend on having your email address displayed on a vehicle, for example, I always recommend going with the business email.
